June 20: Royal Caribbean International has introduced a new deluxe cruise brand, Azamara Cruises, which will initially be made up of a two ship fleet of former Renaissance vessels. The first ship AZAMARA JOURNEY (ex R SIX, BLUE DREAM, CELEBRITY JOURNEY) began service on May 5, from Cape Liberty, NY. The ship was built in 2000 at Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France as the R SIX. While sailing for Pullmantur, the vessel was renamed BLUE DREAM (2). Following the purchase of Pullmantur by Royal Caribbean, the ship switched fleets with Celebrity's ZENITH and was renamed CELEBRITY JOURNEY. It was then decided to create the new Azamara cruise line, so rather than add the R-class ships to Celebrity, she was quickly renamed AZAMARA JOURNEY. For the inaugural summer season, the vessel will sail the Bermuda itineraries originally intended for the ZENITH.

On June 7, Azamara Cruises announced itinerary changes for the second ship, AZAMARA QUEST (ex R SEVEN, DELPHIN RENAISSANCE, BLUE MOON), which was due to sail on October 19. AZAMARA QUEST will now sail on her maiden voyage on October 24 to allow extra time in the shipyard. Experience with AZAMARA JOURNEY, which sailed one day late on her first voyage, made this itinerary change prudent. The first voyage for AZAMARA QUEST is now a two-night cruise from Miami to Coco Cay, a private island in the Bahamas. The second sailing will be a five-night cruise to Key West, Playa del Carmen and Costa Maya.

Both ships are 30,277 gt, carry 710 guests and are registered in Malta. Both 593 foot long vessels were given a US$17.5m dollar refurbishment before entering the new Azamara Cruises fleet.
