Court break for snooker star's wife
GORDON CURRIE
THE wife of the snooker millionaire Stephen Hendry escaped a driving ban yesterday after apologising in court for claiming she has to live on just £100 a week.
Mandy Hendry had told the court her income was only £100 per week, despite her husband earning more than £8 million in prize money alone.
She was ordered to appear at the court to explain herself yesterday and turned up to apologise if she had "misled" the court.
Fred Simpson, her solicitor acting on her behalf, said her previous claim was a genuine mistake and she was "fortunate" to be married to a wealthy sportsman.
"She is a housewife, married with two children," he said. "She doesn’t work as such, but she is married to a top professional snooker player. Her husband’s income is very substantial.
"I understand she put on the form her income as £100 a week. She simply put down a figure as she didn’t have an income of her own as such.
"Her intention was not to mislead the court, but I would apologise on her behalf if anybody was misled by that. She has a very good family income."
Hendry, 37, who was driving a £45,000 BMW X5, was clocked speeding at 65mph on the Perth to Blairgowrie road near Scone Palace, where the limit is 40mph. She said: "At the time of this incident I had not realised that the speeding limit had been reduced from 60mph to 40mph as I had not used this road for some time."
Mr Simpson told Perth District Court his client was collecting rugs for her horses when she was recorded speeding.
"She accepts she should have paid more attention to road signs, and had she been aware of the 40mph limit, she would have adjusted her speed accordingly," he said. "She has two previous convictions for speeding. She drives thousands of miles per annum. She does not make a habit of speeding."
Hendry, who already has seven penalty points on her licence, escaped a ban when Justice of the Peace Stephen White imposed four penalty points. He also fined her £350 and gave her 28 days to pay.
He added: "I accept your comments about your previous statement of your means."
Hendry, of Castleton Road, Auchterarder, Perthshire, pleaded guilty to speeding on 9 December last year when the case was first called in February.
As she left court, she confirmed she was pleased to have kept her licence but declined to comment any further.
Stephen Hendry is the seven times former snooker World Champion and one of Scotland’s richest sporting stars.
