Indeed, the flags of freedom began to fly in Germany after the war. But historians argued for decades whether Germany had been liberated on May 8, 1945, or whether it was a question of defeat and the total breakdown of German ideas and aims.
The debate over the significance of May 8 and the question of defeat or liberation only ebbed after then President Richard von Weizsäcker gave his memorable speech to the German parliament on the 40th anniversary of the end of the war.
