New Fed Cup captain John Alexander has given his blessing to woman of the moment Alicia Molik chasing individual glory rather than representing her country.

Neither Alexander nor Molik's manager, Peter Smylie, would confirm or deny if Molik, who is 10th in the WTA rankings after reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, had given Tennis Australia a definitive answer on her representative plans for the year.

"As far as I know, she hasn't made her mind up," Smylie said. "But whatever decision she makes, she'll do what's best for her."

It is understood Molik has told Alexander she is unlikely to play in a crucial Asian zonal qualifying series in New Delhi, India, in late April and remains uncommitted beyond that.

Alexander sent an email to all Australia's leading players during the week, inquiring about their availability for the Fed Cup tie.

They must respond by Thursday. The team will be announced on February 14.

If Molik does not play, Alexander is certain to make in-form Queenslander Samantha Stosur - ranked 45th in the world - the team's No. 1 singles player.
