NEW YORK -- The Yankees fell short of a 40th trip the World Series this month, dropping a seven-game American League Championship Series to the Red Sox after winning the first three games.

But even an unprecedented collapse to their fiercest rivals can't erase the rich history that the Yankees have in the Fall Classic.

New York has appeared in 39 of the 100 World Series, winning 26 titles in the process. To put that in perspective, the next three teams after the Yankees -- the Cardinals, A's and Dodgers -- have combined to win 24 championships.

The Yankees' 26 World Series titles are the standard for all professional sports franchises, topping the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens (23 Stanley Cups), the National Basketball Association's Boston Celtics (16 titles) and the National Football League's Green Bay Packers (12 championships).
