Maguire overwhelms White

Jimmy White's hopes of a first major title since 1992 were ruined by Stephen Maguire after the Scotsman beat him in the European Open final.
Maguire, ahead 7-1 at the break, held his nerve to win 9-3 and claim the Ł48,000 winner's cheque.

Playing in his first final, Maguire built a 3-0 advantage after two sizeable breaks and a run of 137.

Maguire lead 6-0 at one stage, but White got on the board in the seventh frame but could not produce a miracle.

White was called for three successive misses to lose the sixth frame.

White's predicament was typified by the events of frame six in which Maguire was fortunate to secure a snooker as the cue ball remained angled in the jaws of the corner pocket.

Rather than rolling up to the pack of five remaining reds, White twice failed with an attempt to hit them off the side cushion.

He was warned by referee Jan Verhaas that a third miss would result in loss of frame and adopted a slow roll, but once again failed to make contact.

Maguire held his nerve after the resumption, despite a break of 125 by White and the 22-year-old world number 41 sealed his first title with a break of 57.

White, whose last title was the prestigious UK Championship in 1992, was making his 23rd appearance in a major final, albeit his first since 2000.
