Benfica chief Vieira may quit role
Ian Simpson
LISBON, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Luis Filipe Vieira has hinted he might quit as Benfica chairman following the on-pitch death of the club's player Miklos Feher, private TSF radio reported on Wednesday.
Vieira said the death of the 24-year-old Hungarian international during a match on Sunday had forced him to reconsider his future with the Lisbon club, one of Portugal's traditional powers.
'Unfortunately, in soccer it's only when things like this take place that people unite and people try to bring out their best,' the 54-year-old Vieira said late on Tuesday at the end of a mourning period at the club's Stadium of Light, where Feher's coffin was put on display.
'It's worth it for everybody to reflect, and I certainly am going to reflect with my family in terms of the future, of what my presence will be with Benfica,' he said.
Feher's body is being flown back to Hungary on Wednesday for burial, accompanied by Benfica players and officials, and government representatives.
'People have a way of being in their lives,' Vieira added. 'I have one, and Benfica is not going to make me change it.'
Vieira, who made a fortune in the tire business, was elected chairman in November 2003 after heading the club's soccer unit. Benfica have millions of fans at home and worldwide among Portuguese emigrants but have not won a league title since 1994.
The ceremonies for Feher at Benfica's stadium, the venue for this year's European Championship final, attracted hundreds of mourners.
Feher collapsed in injury time of the televised game against Vitoria Guimaraes with Benfica leading 1-0. He was rushed to hospital where he died of cardio-respiratory arrest.
An autopsy was inconclusive. Tissue examinations are being carried out to try to determine the cause of death.
Joao Paulo Almeida, Benfica's team doctor, said Feher had reacted for only one or two seconds to efforts to revive him on the pitch.
'He already had his eyes dilated. He did not respond to any stimulus,' he told Correio da Manha newspaper.
Feher's last medical examination was in January.
Asked about tests for performance-enhancing drugs and the banned steroid nandrolone, Almeida said; 'At Benfica we don't use those substances.'
Benfica are third in the league, 11 points behind leaders Porto.
