No amount of makeup can disguise the fact that Marilyn Manson has taken one hellava beating over the past few months. Shame. If his magic has worn off them it's more to do with the world around him than his output as 'This Is The New Shit' testifies.
Nothing is more aggravating to critics than a subject of scorn that happily engages in a bout of self-baiting. That's exactly what Manson does here with, it appears, much glee. Lest we forget he's still a smart man, we're not talking about Fred Durst.
Played out over an industrial rock backdrop, the opening line - "Everything has been said before/There's nothing left to say anymore" - is arguably one of Manson's best cutting lyrics to date and sums up his predicament perfectly.
And there's a welcome chance to rattle off some obscenities along the way - all in aid of irony, naturally.
