US Officer: 12 UK, 4 US Dead in Helicopter Crash

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Twelve British and four U.S. soldiers were killed when a U.S. Marine helicopter crashed in Kuwait, a U.S. military spokesman in Kuwait said on Friday.
The account given by U.S. Marine Corps Major David Andersen contradicted an earlier version given to reporters by U.S. officials in Washington that the crash had killed 12 Americans and four Britons.

"We are confirming 12 British and four Americans dead," Andersen told Reuters.

"The crash is still under investigation but preliminary reports suggest that it was not as a result of hostile fire."

The CH-46E helicopter crashed about 10 miles south of the border with Iraq at about 7:40 p.m. EST on Thursday.
