Ferreira Slays Sampras
South African squares ledger with champ to 6-6

Wayne Ferreira added to Pete Sampras' anguish at the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic in Scottsdale with a 7-5, 7-5 victory which lifted the South African into the quarterfinals. Ferreira improved his career record to 6-6 against Sampras, breaking a two-match losing streak against the American, who has not advanced beyond the second round in five visits to Scottsdale.
The only breaks in the match came in the 11th game of both sets as Sampras was broken at 0-40 in the first set and on a third break point in the second set. Sampras, playing his first tournament since the Australian Open, had his only break point opportunity in the final game but Ferreira saved it and closed the match with a forehand winner down the line.
Ferreira said: "I like to play against guys that serve and volley big." (Ferreira also referred to his success against Richard Krajicek, whom he leads 4-3.) "I've played well this year and I've worked hard on my game. My backhand and forehand have improved and I've changed my whole stance. I'm playing as well as I ever have."
Ferreira attributed his success to new coach and former ATP player Johan de Beer, who has rebuilt his countryman's game. Sampras struggled returning Ferreira's serve throughout the one hour, 14 minute match. The South African lost only 12 points in 12 service games. Sampras has lost five of his past seven meetings against Ferreira.
Sampras said: "He's got a good all-around game; his serve is good and he comes out with confidence against me. I didn't put any pressure on his serve and he played a solid match. I can't seem to break through here and I've always struggled. I feel bad for my brother (tournament director Gus) and I love being here. I just can't seem to find my game here."
