JOHN LOGAN TO WRITE 10TH ADVENTURE-DRAMA IN PARAMOUNT'S "STAR TREK" SAGA
HOLLYWOOD, November 15, 2000…John Logan, co-writer of this year's blockbuster "Gladiator," has been named to write the 10th and latest motion picture in the continuing "Star Trek" saga, the most successful film franchise in entertainment history. Since debuting in 1979 with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," the film series has grossed more than $1 billion at box offices worldwide and more than $5 billion with the addition of product sales and home video revenues.
Logan co-wrote "Gladiator" with David H. Franzoni and William Nicholson. He also co-wrote the screenplay (from his own story) for Oliver Stone's acclaimed football drama "Any Given Sunday," starring Al Pacino and Cameron Diaz. In addition, he wrote the HBO movie "RKO 281," which won the 2000 Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television and earned him an Emmy nomination for his screenplay.
Currently, Logan is working on a screenplay about the life of Howard Hughes for director Michael Mann and on the script for "The Time Machine," based on the book by H.G. Wells.
An accomplished playwright, Logan wrote "Never the Sinner," which premiered in Chicago in 1985, opened in London's West End in 1990 and received the New York Outer Critics Circle Award for an Off-Broadway Play in 1998. Logan's other plays include "Hauptmann," "Riverview," "The View From Golgotha" and "Speaking in Tongues."
Sherry Lansing, Chairman of Paramount Pictures' Motion Picture Group, said: "John is an immensely talented writer with the rare ability to combine drama and action without sacrificing one for the other. I am thrilled that he is on board."
Emmy Award-winning producer Rick Berman will produce the newest "Star Trek" film. He also produced "Star Trek: Generations," "Star Trek: First Contact" and "Star Trek: Insurrection" for Paramount Pictures. Longtime "Star Trek" cast members Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner will reprise their roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lieutenant Commander Data respectively.
