Even Song – Of Man’s First Disobedience (Expulsion from the Divine Abode) (Displeased Records)

Formed in 1997, Even Song have been causing quite a stir on the European mainland ever since the release of their first demo entitled "Lost Tales." Although this was only released in their native home country of Hungary, it won them a recording deal with Displeased Records who have supported the band ever since. Listening to the new album (their second), "Of Man’s First Disobedience" it’s easy to see why Displeased were so eager to sign them up.

The album opens with the epic melodies of "Cosmic Empire;" which also begins the concept of Old Testament stories, which permeate the songs and lend a great deal of depth and atmosphere. The tales that unfold are taken from the erection of Babylon and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden.

The band draws on this material and interprets it with their own musical visions. Agnes Toth’s keyboards are beautiful washes of sound that meld the other instruments together into a whole, while her singing is often reminiscent of Julianne Regan whose haunting voice once graced the now sadly departed All About Eve.

The unsung hero of the album is the bands bassist, Gergely Cseh who weaves himself into the fabric of the music almost un-noticed. His playing brings a great deal of depth and diversity to the album in such an understated way that if you aren’t listening properly, you’ll miss many of the albums highlights. If there is anything that lets the album down, it is only that the band tries to put as much detail as they can into each song, which sometimes overloads the listener and there is barely an inch of the album that does not have a lead guitar part on it. This is no bad thing in most areas, as Gabor Olah is a man of incredible talent, but it does have the effect of making you wish for a little respite towards the end of the album.

'Of Man’s First Disobedience' is a sweeping epic of proportions rarely attempted by others. Even Song are unique in what they do, and this makes them all the more vital to the scene. Definitely a band to watch out for in the future.
