Night 1 of the Dem Convention — The most exhilarating feeling was knowing that we were off and on our way to conduct the merciless removal of Donald Trump & execute the wholesale crushing of his Republican enablers. The first heartbreaking and inspiring hour was tear-inducing. The politicians in the second hour less so. Michelle’s sardonic, “it is what it is,” was the bomb! Young Kristin Urquiza: “My dad’s pre-existing condition was trusting Donald Trump - and that cost him his life.” Gutted. The Biden grandkids reciting the Pledge was appropriately awkward and geeky and cute. Thank u Bernie for moving the ball down field; the genie cannot be now put back in the bottle. There’s a massive uprising underway - during a pandemic! - against greed, capitalism and the police killing spree — and none of us are going back to business as usual, not while we watch hundreds of thousands die as Wall Street and the for-profit health care industry profit madly. I don’t care for the national anthem - its lyrics support slavery, and the tune sucks — but for some reason, the way they did it last night made me cry. What’s that about? Is it because I know we now live in a failed state, one that has its nurses reduced to wearing garbage bags to protect their lives while they work to save ours? Yes, that — and the new NBC News poll yesterday showing Trump had closed the gap in Michigan to just 4 points.
At the end of the night, most networks cut away quickly and didn’t show the convention’s stunning closing song featuring Billy Porter and Stephen Stills. So, therefore, I present it to you here:
