DYLAN RECORDS SURPRISE 'MODERN TIMES' FOLLOW-UP Dark new disc with a bluesy border-town feel arrives in April By David Fricke
I'm listening to Billy Joe Shaver/And I'm reading James Joyce/Some people tell me I got the blood of the land in my voice," Bob Dylan sings in a leathery growl, capturing the essence of his forthcoming studio album - raw-country love songs, sly wordplay and the wounded state of the nation - in "I Feel a Change Coming On," one of the record's 10 new originals.
Set for late April, the as-yet-untitled album arrives a few months after Dylan's outtakes collection Tell Tale Signs nad it "came as a surprise," says a source close to Dylan's camp. Last year, filmmaker Olivier Dahan, who directed the 2007 Edith Piaf biopic, La Vie en Rose, approached Dylan about writing songs for his next feature. Dylan responded with "Life Is Hard," a bleak ballad with mandolin, pedal steel and him singing in a dark, crystal clear voice, "The evening winds are still/I've lost the way and will." (The song appears in the film My Own Love Song, starring Renee Zellweger.)
Inspired, Dylan kept writing and recording songs with his road band and guests, with Los Lobos' David Hidalgo rumored on the accordion. Dylan produce the album under his usual pseudonym, Jack Frost. The disc has the live-in-the-studio feel of Dylan's last two studio records, 2001's Love & Theft and 2006's Modern Times, but with the seductive border-cafe feel (courtesy of the accordion on every track) and an emphasis on struggling-love songs. The effect - in the opening shuffle, "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'," the Texas-dance-hall jump of "If You Ever Go To Houston" and the waltz "This Dream of You" - is a gnarly turn on early-1970's records like New Morning and Planet Waves.
Dylan makes references to the national chaos, as on the viciously funny slow blues "My Wife's Home Town" ("State gone broke, the county's dry/Don't me lookin' at me with that evil eye"), culminating in the deceptive rolling rock of "It's All Good." Against East L.A. accordion and a snake's nest of guitars, Dylan tells you how bad things are - "Brick by brick they tear you down/A teacup of water is enough to drown" - then ices each verse with the title line, a pithy shot of sneering irony and calming promise. "You would never expect the record after Modern Times to sound like this", the source says. "Bob takes all of those disparate elements you hear and puts them into a track. But you can't put your finger on it - 'It sounds exactly like that.' That's why he's so original."
Additional Rumours About The New Album
There are several additional pieces of information about the new album. One is that Dylan recorded thirteen songs in all, of which ten are expected to be on this release. Speculatively, this would leave out-takes for use in “My Own Love Song”, but nothing more has been heard regarding Dylan’s involvement with this film.
Another strong rumour is that Mike Campbell (of the Heartbreakers) and David Hidalgo (of Los Lobos) are amongst the musicians on the new album. These two guitarists are said to have worked with what has been described as the nucleus of Dylan’s tour band. The Heartbreakers’ keyboard player Benmont Tench is also said to have played on the album.
There is also speculation of a video to go with the album release, but there are no details as yet. Of course, that rumoured animation-video prepared for ‘Mississippi’ (from “Tell Tale Signs”) never saw the light of day, so perhaps that could be used – who knows?
As trailed in ISIS Magazine (see The Wicked Messenger #6649 for January 4, 2009), a completely new Bob Dylan album is in the can. Our understanding is that the album was recorded last October in California (maybe with the recording sessions starting slightly earlier than that). The sequencing of the tracks was completed in January and the album is expected to contain ten tracks.
Jeff Rosen has brought the finished album to Europe for listening sessions in various cities including London, Munich and Oslo. These “listenings” were mainly for sales and marketing staff at Sony. We must assume that similar sessions have taken place in the United States. Several different titles have been put forward for the album but, for the most part, these seem to be little more than internet babble and at the time of the listenings (mid February) no title had been decided upon. At one time, it was suggested that the album would be released in the autumn, then a release date in May 2009 was mentioned but it seems that the release has now been brought forward to the last week of April, to coincide with later stages of Dylan’s forthcoming European tour. There are strong rumours about the circumstances in which the album came about (See entry for “My Own Love Song” below). There are also rumours that the musicians on the album are not all from the current touring band.
Meanwhile, we will leave you to speculate on the coincidence of any additional London concert date (April 26) and the release of a new album. We would suggest that you check the ISIS website regularly for further information.
"For those of you prepared to believe, there was a listening session in London on Tuesday at Sony HQ. This was for Sony bigwigs and other key people in the music industry. The press were not involved. Some, but not all, tracks were played and Rosen, who was present, said that all details were embargoed for the time being. This comes directly from a close contact who was there and who, for obvious reasons, is obeying Rosen's instructions. I therefore have no details of the album to offer you other than that Sony staff were told to go and prepare for an end of April release."
"Sziasztok! Mit tudtok a "Dignity" című lemezről(MOONLIGHT RECORDS 1995)?" Tényleg érdekelne a véleményetek, ugyanis kacérkodok a megvételével. Előre is köszi!
US lakosok vehetnek onnan mp3-at).
a Marching to the City esetleg lehet a No Turning Back?
Dreamin’ of You
the light in this place is really bad, like being in the bottom of a stream any minute now i'm expecting to wake up from a dream miss so much, the softest touch like the grave of some child who neither wept or smiled, i'm hiding my faith in the rain i've been dreaming of you, thats all i do and its driving me insane
somewhere down is breaking light is streaking across the floor church bells are ringing, i wonder who they're ringing for travel under any star, you'll see me wherever you are the shadowy past is so vague and so vast, i'm sleeping in the palace of pain i've been dreaming of you, thats all i do but its driving me insane
maybe they'll get me, maybe they won't, but whatever it won't be tonight i wish your hand was in mine right now, we could go where the moon is white for years they had me locked in a cage, then they threw me onto the stage somethings just last longer than you think they will and they never ever explain im dreaming of you, thats all i do and its driving me insane
well i eat when im hungry, drink when im dry live my life on the square even if the flesh falls off my face it wont matter as long as you're there feel like a ghost in love, underneath the heavens above feel further away then i ever did before,
feel further then i can take dreamin of you, thats all i do,
but its driving me insane
everything in the way is so shy like the day, in queer and unusual fall, spirals of golden haze here in there in a blaze, like beams of light in a star. maybe you're here or maybe you weren't maybe you touched somebody and got burnt the silent sun has got me on the run, burning a hole in my brain im dreamin of you, thats all i do,
but its driving me insane.

No Turning Back: kikopiztam egy részletet a Wikipediából:
Outtakes
Fifteen compositions were recorded for Time Out of Mind, of which eleven would make the final cut. The four that did not were "Mississippi", which was re-recorded for "Love and Theft", "No Turning Back", the Elizabeth Cotten composition "Shake Sugaree" and, according to Jim Dickinson "the best song there was from the session", "Girl from the Red River Shore".[citation needed]
On past albums, some fans have criticized Dylan for some of the creative decisions made with his albums, particularly with song selection. Time Out of Mind was no different except this time the criticism came from colleagues who were disappointed to see their personal favorites left on the shelf. When Dylan accepted the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, he mentioned Columbia Records chairman Don Ienner, who "convinced me to put [the album] out, although his favorite songs aren't on it."[citation needed]
Unlike past sessions, none of these outtakes have circulated among collectors, something unprecedented for a Bob Dylan album. "With all of my records, there’s an abundance of material left over - stuff that, for a variety of reasons, doesn’t make the final cut. And other people seem to think they have some kind of right to it. That it’s their property even, which is baffling to me. I mean, you don’t drive a car out of the showroom without paying for it, do you? You don’t leave the supermarket without passing through the check-out with your goods. It's called stealing. Why the principle should be thought to be any different when it comes to music, I really don’t know."
According to Dylan, "If you had heard the original recording [of "Mississippi"], you'd see in a second" why it was omitted and recut for Love and Theft. "The song was pretty much laid out intact melodically, lyrically and structurally, but Lanois didn't see it. Thought it was pedestrian. Took it down the Afro-polyrhythm route - multirhythm drumming, that sort of thing. Polyrhythm has its place, but it doesn't work for knifelike lyrics trying to convey majesty and heroism.
"Maybe we had worked too hard on other things, I can't remember," Dylan continues, "but Lanois can get passionate about what he feels to be true. He's not above smashing guitars. I never cared about that unless it was one of mine. Things got contentious once in the parking lot. He tried to convince me that the song had to be 'sexy, sexy and more sexy.' I know about sexy, too. He reminded me of Sam Phillips, who had once said the same thing to John Prine about a song, but the circumstances were not similar. I tried to explain that the song had more to do with the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights than witch doctors, and just couldn't be thought of as some kind of ideological voodoo thing. But he had his own way of looking at things, and in the end I had to reject this because I thought too highly of the expressive meaning behind the lyrics to bury them in some steamy cauldron of drum theory. On the performance you're hearing, the bass is playing a triplet beat, and that adds up to all the multirhythm you need, even in a slow-tempo song. I think Lanois is an excellent producer, though."
The two-CD, 27-song set, out Oct. 7, contains previously unreleased studio recordings, demos, alternate takes, live tracks and rarities spanning 1989 to 2006, a rich period that generated the lauded Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times and Oh Mercy. A third 12-track disc is part of a limited-edition deluxe set in a hardcover slipcase with a book with photos of all of Dylan's singles. The 27-song version also will be issued in a limited-edition four-LP set.
