World number nine and 2005 Sydney international winner, Alicia Molik, today announced that she is withdrawing from the Hastings Direct International Championships in Eastbourne.
The young Australian who was seeded three in Eastbourne is suffering from vestibular neuritis, an inner ear condition which leaves her without full vision and affects her balance.
“This sport I play needs split second timing and reaction and it’s hard enough to play when fully fit. I have thought long and hard but it’s a decision which will be best for me in the long run. Now my plan is to return to Melbourne and take as much time as is needed in order to get well and fully fit.
“I never thought I would watch Wimbledon with my family on the couch at home but that’s the way it will be” she said.
The withdrawl of the number three seed gives USA's Mashona Washington a second chance. Washington reached the final stages of the singles qualifying draw and has been promoted into the main draw as 'lucky loser'. She faces Virginie Razzano of France for a place in the quarter finals.
Playing her first match in two months after an inner ear infection forced her withdrawal from Roland Garros, world No.9 Alicia Molik was beaten Wednesday at the DFS Classic in Birmingham, England. The No.2-seeded Australian, who received a first round bye, fell to American Laura Granville, 64 62.
Alicia Molik has withdrawn from the 2005 Family Circle Cup due to an inner ear infection. “I’m extremely disappointed not to play here this year,” stated Molik. “The people are really friendly in Charleston and I love the atmosphere. I hope to be back next year.”
