Molik Makes Return to Tour This Week in Rome

ROME, Italy - After initially believing it would take the entire 2006 season to recover from a nagging inner ear infection, a fully-recovered Alicia Molik will make her grand return to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour this week at the Internazionali d'Italia in Rome.

Molik, who was ranked in the Top 10 as recently as last summer, began showing signs of recovery from her illness in early March, and jumped on the opportunity to get back into the swing of things.

"I started praciticing again at the start of March," said the 25-year-old Melbourne native. "I didn't necessarily ease into it, I started hitting quite regularly straight away. I'm 100% now, a lot better than the last time I tried to come back. My ear condition is well and truly behind me."

Molik actually made her return to pro competition this past week at the $50,000 ITF Women's Circuit event in Gifu, Japan. Although she dropped the opening match of her pro circuit comeback to compatriot Casey Dellacqua, the Australian has felt ready to face the big guns of the Tour again for a while, but was held back with other commitments.

"I actually planned on coming back a little earlier, but had to stay in Australia to participate in the finale of the show Dancing With The Stars. I didn't win but all the contestants came back for the finale and I had to uphold that commitment."

Between the summer of 2004 and spring 2005, Molik was one of the hottest players on the Tour, winning 37 of 44 singles matches, four of five career singles titles (including the Tier I event in Zürich), a bronze medal at the Athens Olympics and reaching her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open. On January 31, 2005, after the final eight finish in Melbourne, she became the first Australian to crack the Top 10 since Wendy Turnbull 20 years earlier, reaching a career-high of No.8 in February after finishing runner-up at Doha.

In March 2005, however, she developed an inner ear infection (vestibular neuronitis), which affected her balance and vision. She won just one match in her last nine events of the season, eventually announcing the aforementioned break from the professional circuit to fully recuperate.

"At the start of the year, I was thinking I'd be having the whole year off. But I have been feeling great and practicing and I believe I'm hitting the ball well. I can't wait. I'm really pumped."

Molik is also scheduled to play at Istanbul next week.

Molik To Make Long-Awaited Return at Fed Cup

MELBOURNE, Australia -

Five months after announcing an extended break from tennis to recover from ongoing struggles with illness, Australia's Alicia Molik will take the court again, albeit not on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour just yet.

Molik, who just a year ago was ranked in the Top 10 in the world, will make her long-awaited return during the Asia / Oceania Zone Group I round robin competition in Seoul, South Korea between Wednesday, April 19 and Saturday, April 22.

Between the summer of 2004 and spring of 2005, Molik was one of the hottest players on the Tour, winning 37 of 44 singles matches, capturing four of her five career singles titles (including the Tier I event in Zurich), winning a bronze medal at the Athens Olympics and reaching her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open. On January 31, 2005, after the final eight finish in Melbourne, she became the first Australian to crack the Top 10 since Wendy Turnbull 20 years earlier, reaching a career-high of No.8 in February after finishing runner-up at Doha.

In March of 2005, however, the 25-year-old Adelaide native developed an inner ear infection (vestibular neuronitis), which affected her balance and vision. She won just one match in her last nine events of the season, eventually announcing the aforementioned break from the professional circuit to fully recuperate.

Last Thursday, March 23, Optus Australian Fed Cup captain David Taylor named Molik to his Fed Cup squad, which also includes Samantha Stosur, Nicole Pratt, Rennae Stubbs and Casey Dellacqua. Former Fed Cup representative and Olympic medallist Nicole Bradtke will also travel with the team in the role of assistant captain.

"At the start of the year, I was thinking I'd be having the whole year off," Molik stated. "But I have been feeling great and practising for a couple of weeks and I believe I'm hitting the ball well.

"I can't wait. I'm really pumped."

"It will certainly be exciting to have Alicia joining us in Korea and seeing her back on court," Taylor stated. "Both Nicole and I will be keeping a close watch on the players' individual form as the competition draws closer, however these squad members give us a number of potential singles and doubles combinations."

Molik was a member of her country's Fed Cup team from 1998 to 2004, holding an 8-1 win-loss record on hardcourt.

Molik planning shock comeback

March 23, 2006

foxsports.com.au

ALICIA Molik is planning a shock comeback to professional tennis just a week after vowing not to rush her return from a career-threatening virus.

Molik hasn't played since a nagging inner ear infection forced Australia's former world No.8 to retire mid-match in the first round of her Zurich title defence last October.

But in a major surprise, the 25-year-old was today named in Australia's five-woman Fed Cup squad to contest the Oceania play-offs in Seoul next month.

Molik had planned to sit out the entire 2006 season to try to recover from vestibular neuronitis, a debilitating condition that left her fatigued and off-balance since first striking her down last April.

"She's really excited. She's got a real bug in her belly to get back on court," Molik's manager Lisa Chaffey said today.

"She's been practising for the last couple of weeks and it's great she's made herself available for the Fed Cup."

Although Australia's team will not be finalised until the day before for the week-long round-robin in South Korea begins on April 17, Molik considers the timing and environment perfect for a comeback, and hopes to use the event to test the waters before embarking on a full-scale return to the WTA Tour.

The Australia team is being captained by her former long-time coach David Taylor for the first time and Molik is certain to be picked for doubles at least if she feels up to playing.

"Alicia's not seeing this as a one-off," Chaffey said.

"Timing-wise, she thinks it's good – she will be surrounded by Aussies and a really good support crew.

"After that, she will look at making a return to the tour – possibly at a couple of claycourt tournaments in Europe before the French Open.

"She's thrilled. At the end of last year, she looked like taking the whole of 2006 off.

"She took time off to look after her health and she feels she's done that."

Molik had been flying before being stopped in her tracks in Miami last April.

The Melbourne-based South Australian had soared to a career-high ranking inside the world's top 10 after capturing four titles and a cherished Athens bronze medal in six memorable months.

Molik attempted to soldier on with her illness but suffered three straight first-round defeats before reluctantly opting to skip Wimbledon.

After a two-month break, the 2005 Australian Open quarter-finalist made another unsuccessful return at the US Open before five defeats in her next six matches forced Molik to abort her comeback in tearful fashion while trailing Jelena Jankovic 6-3 4-2 in the first round of the Zurich Open.

Molik has since slumped to No.295 in the world but will return to the tour with a special protected ranking inside the top 20 whenever she steps back on court for a WTA event.

Just last week Molik was reluctant to set a date for a return to competitive tennis.

"I made a premature comeback last time so it's very important that I am comfortable and that my game is steadily improving before I do that again," Molik said after her elimination from the Seven Network's Dancing with the Stars.

"I want to feel comfortable and I don't want to put too much expectation on myself."

Molik will be joined in Seoul by Samantha Stosur, Nicole Pratt, Rennae Stubbs and Fed Cup debutante Casey Dellacqua.
